Remarks | Gary Bettcher kindly donated 83rd ID General Order 104 from May 18, 1945 which contains the Silver Star citation of Sergeant Hawley. It reads: Sergeant Palmer F. Hawley, 37468411, Infantry, 329th Infantry, United States Army. For gallantry in action on 2 April 1945, in Germany. While leading a patrol against a farmhouse that contained some enemy troops, Sergeant Hawley with complete disregard for personal safety stood in the open and attempted to negotiate their surrender. While thus exposed the enemy troops began to deploy and Sergeant Hawley unhesitantly gave the order for his patrol to open fire. Throughout this action he displayed outstanding initiative and coolness under fire until the enemy had been overcome. During this heroic act Sergeant Hawley was killed by enemy artillery. The conspicious courage and aggressive leadership of this non-commissioned officer reflects the highest credit upon himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States. The citation can be seen below. |
