Remarks | Carl Sobala was born November 2, 1922 in Amsterdam, Ohio and was inducted into the Army on September 9, 1943. He arrived in England on April 16, 1944. Mr. Jason Eddy, Assistant Principal at Carrollton (OH) High School provided me with an article in the The Free Press Standard from 8/10/1944. The article is on the death of Carl Sobala and reads: 'Miss Helen Sabola of Carrollton received word this morning, Thursday, from the War Dept. that her brother, PFC Carol Sabola was killed in action, July 8, 1944 somewhere in France. Carl was inducted Sept. 1943 and had been overseas since May 1944. He was with the Infantry unit, and received training at Van Dorn, Miss., and Camp Breckenridge Ky. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Kathryn Sabola, sister Helen and four brothers: Seaman 1/c Alex, somewhere in South Pacific; Joe, Frank and Henry of the home. Carl was employed as foreman at Berger Steel Mfg., Canton, at the time of his induction. Carl graduated from Carrollton High School, with hones, in the class of 1940, and he accepted his military duties as sincerely as he did his school studies. He gave assistance to his mother and family, at the time of the tragic death of his father and continued to accept the responsibility as head of the bereaved family.
