Remarks Technician Fifth Grade Barber was a member of the Medical Detachment. The morning report for August 16, 1944 on page 16 lists him joining the Medical Detachment from the 48th Replacement Battalion while holding the rank of Private with MOS 657 Medical Corpsman. The page can be seen below.

Gary Bettcher kindly donated 83rd ID General Order 104 May 18, 1945 which contains the Silver Star citation of TEC5 Barber. It reads:

Technician Fifth Grader James W. Barber, 1140276, Medical Department, 329th Infantry, United States Army. For gallantry in action on 15 April 1945, in Germany. While advancing through the woods west of Nutha, Germany, the company of which Technician Fift Grade Barber was a member was held up by well-concealed enemy machinegun and rifle fire. Technician Fifth Grade Barber with complete disregard for his personal safety and in complete observation of the enmey unhesitantly ran forward to administer aid to a wounded comrade. While engaged in this heroic act he was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper. The outstanding humanity and couragious devotion to duty of this non-commissioned officer reflects the highest credit upon himself and exemplify the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
